Director Statement

My artistic practice has constantly oscillated between documentary and performative practices to address the questions of personal archive and public performance. Born two years before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, I grew up in a society of mixed ideologies and without a single set framework of behavior, which influenced my interest in retracing the debris of such everyday bipolarity in post-Soviet societies.

For my works I embark on journeys through both real and digital landscapes creating an alternative archive of non- fictional and autobiographical material, based on interviews, found footage documents and images. Later I implement a variety of performative techniques to deconstruct documentary materials, abolish the hierarchy between various sources and reassemble them applying fictional elements. Through working with hybrid media, mixing both digital and analogue formats, I'm investigating how our most personal thoughts are shaped by collective imagery based on history, media and contemporary social life.
