That Disappearance

Hiro Kano Debut full-length film
"That Disappearance"

That which he lost - was it that which had already past, or that which was to come?

Japanese newcomer director and screenwriter, Hiro Kano, who has been assistant director to a number of movie directors, in addition to director Katsuhito Ishii and others.

Making his debut in the style of a full-length independent movie, based on a plot which had been thought up more than ten years prior.

Our protagonist, talented detective Matsui is investigating a serial stalker. We then have the third female victim of his, a mysterious man who looms around them, and yet another woman who seems to be connected to all of this.

This is all permeated by the daily memory loss that Matsui himself is battling with.

When the thread of the case connects Matsui with deep scars of his heart left in the past, tragedy ensues.

The artistic sense of our director Kano, a mysterious atmosphere, and entertainment that draws a viewer into the story all come together to create a suspenseful, human story.

<Introduction to the Story, That Disappearance, by the Director>

“Developing a vulnerable man driven to revenge created by favoritism”

It is a universal necessity for people to love someone, therefore in the same way the emotion of hate, too, is universal. The battle between love and hate is expanding all the time, and when hate wins out it not only adheres to the self, but something disappears with it, too.

One loss – our so–called “Disappearance” – brings one new love and creates one new hate. Where you can see love and the illusion of peace that accumulates there with it, undermining it is the looming well of hatred, created by the potential for loss, or “Disappearance.” It is a chain. This chain continues as long as a person lives, and you cannot stop it however you resist. There is no way to be saved of it. If it were stopped, it would be a provision of natural fate. But humans are weak - and it is the “weakness of man” that bears this “chain of Disappearance.” This is the philosophy which has created this project.

It takes a bit of courage to write a low-budget independent movie script of a human-drama genre story in such kind of a suspense taste, but the goal is not to make a self-indulgent independent movie, but entertainment with a thoroughly enjoyable story.

This is the long story of a certain detective.

We want the viewers of the movie to feel the humanity of, and understand the person of detective Kota Matsui. That is to say, feel humanity itself.

To focus less on the sadness that comes with Disappearance, but more on the happiness comes with creation – this is what my friends and I are hoping for to be able to communicate to the people who see this film.
