Director Statement

The idea for Ascent came to me while playing with an antique folding mirror that hangs in our bathroom. This, combined with a few life experiences, formed the backbone of the short script.
I believe it is an expandable concept where, while being a short story in itself, Valerie’s adventures could be expanded upon much further.

Ascent was filmed over four weekends, mostly in a wonderful old Victorian building near Brick Lane in East London. Here was the notary’s office, Valerie’s studio, her bedroom and the dark staircase that lends the film it’s spooky atmosphere. We also filmed in two cemeteries and the beautiful English countryside where we ended up being mobbed by a herd of cows.
There was extensive post production work in terms of editing, music, special effects and grading that took a lot longer than the pre production and the actual shooting of the film. We tried to produce a higher production value than the previous films without ever getting in the way of the story. Overall I believe we succeeded and I’m very happy with what we achieved with the resources that we had.
