Director Biography - Joshua Gratton

Joshua Gratton spent his teenage years growing up in Berwick, Nova Scotia, where he found a love for drama and performance in theater. Being an avid fan of 60s, 70s and 80s horror films, especially the slasher genre, he decided to instead pursue filmmaking by moving to Vancouver to acquire a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major in Film Studies at the University of British Columbia. After completing his degree he began work on Cuties and would direct the film during August of 2016. Cuties is his first film.

Director Statement

"Cuties is a facetious and exaggerated depiction of the present day, wrapped up in the skin of a traditional C- or D-tier slasher film, where weed is broadly used, politics are abruptly in your face, paranoia is in the air and depression is deeply apparent. With expressionless humour, this hodgepodge of slashers, cheesy art cinema and coming of age after school specials critiques issues both unique and non-discriminate to the queer community. Gay friend tokenism, exploitation, ignorance under bliss, manipulation, unreadiness and narcissism, all woven into an honest but fanciful tale of a teenager who would rather choose death over rejection. Cuties is a by-the-numbers bodycount flick that still wishes to be a reflection of the current day’s culture, as much as it hopes to fill that void of golden age slasher cinema, but this time with any sexualities completely normalized."
