Director Statement

Director’s Statement for LOVERS:
After reading Fred’s short story and then speaking at length about it, I dove into
creating the visual experience. I have always found stereotypes to be lazy and
dangerous. Observation does not stop, like evolution, there is no end. If we as human
beings stop evolving, we die. And when observing that evolution ceases, ignorance
impedes the truth of a situation.
I found this aspect to be the fundamental flaw in our profiler. His laziness in relying
on stereotypical understanding of who this killer is cost women their lives. The other
aspects of a stereotype in this piece deal with love and hate. I was not interested in
watching a woman die passively at the hands of a man, and I equally did not want to
see a man callously kill a woman. I wanted to feel the love between them leading up to,
during, and after her murder. The idea that our killer killed out of love and the profiler
created the idea of the killer from his fear intrigued me.
In terms of the look of the film, perspective was the inspiration. Life is
experienced through the lens of the individual. When I told Colton (the DP) I wanted to
shoot looking through something he brought crystals and blew my mind. It reflected
frames onto frames, sometimes doubling images. It took the intellectual and made it
visceral for the audience and that is what I strive to do in all of my work.
Making films that contribute to the conversations we need to have is a passion of
mine, and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to make LOVERS.
