Film Maudit 2.0 (www.filmmaudit.org) is a showcase and celebration of new outré, unusual and startling films. Now approaching its 5th edition, the fest is inspired by legendary artist Jean Cocteau’s festival, Le Film Maudit, which celebrated a group of films that were criminally overlooked and neglected at the time.
-
The term film maudit literally means “cursed films,” and this showcase of counter-cinema blends together narrative, documentary and experimental films that in their style and/or subject matter, are deliberately bold, extreme, confrontational, troubling, shocking and/or unusual.
-
We are looking for adventuresome works that eschew conventional genre & format expectations and deal with socio-political issues, taboo subjects, and challenge artistic assumptions and sexual mores. These works can be in the form of feature films, short films, pilots, VR, and works that cross disciplines.
-
The festival is co-presented by and takes place in part at Southern California's boldest center for new performance and media arts, Highways Performance Space & Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. In its 34th year, Highways continues to be an important alternative cultural center in Los Angeles that encourages radical artists from diverse communities to develop and present innovative new works. Described by the Los Angeles Times as “a hub of experimental theater, dance, solo drama and other multimedia performance,” Highways promotes the development of contemporary socially involved artists and art forms.

    LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!

  • This festival was fantastic - unfortunately I was unable to attend as being based in the UK makes it difficult to come across, but this festival made me feel more involved than I thought possible. They still managed to make it feel like an interactive event that I was a part of through active social feeds, pre-recorded Q&A's and a strong virtual program running alongside live events. Highly recommend the festival, and have high hopes that this will continue to grow as the thought, care and attention to detail that is gifted to the festival and it's participants from the festival is really strong. Aside from the above, they also put a fantastic program together and are true champions of underground film and outsider art forms - they're genuine passion for this kind of filmmaking comes through in their programming and execution of the festival. Really impressive and a festival that I would love to be a part of again in the future if the opportunity presented itself.

Film Maudit 2.0 has one of the coolest curations of films I've ever seen at a festival! The team there really strives to create a unique program of filmmakers that want to explore the boundaries of conventional filmmaking.

Had an absolute blast there and recommend that everyone with a fantastically weird movie submit to this fest!

  • Film Maudit is a treasure trove of truly experimental films curated with care. We are honored to have been included amongst the international selection of filmmakers and really enjoyed the online experience. We hope to be able to attend in person at some point, but were really touched and impressed with the effort that went into presenting a quality virtual experience. A special shout out to artistic director Patrick Kennelly - who kept up excellent communications throughout the process, many thanks!

Excellent festival! There just aren't a lot of homes for weird movies, but Patrick does it right. You can feel his love for the outré throughout the entire program. Great communication, and great support for the virtual component, which ends up being an afterthought at a lot of places. I will definitely submit again in the future!
