FESTIVAL DATES for the next edition: March 11-16, 2025 - Hybrid edition - Cinema Village, Maysles Documentary Center, MRHS, Columbia University, Sipsteria, West Harlem neighboring venues - and online.

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION, THE RULES, and THE TERMS thoroughly before completing your submission.

SRFF does not waive entry fees. It believes that doing so hurts the integrity of the competition. In exceptional cases, discount codes are offered to partner organizations or individual applicants, and special student discount waivers (with ID) are offered.

The same rules and entry fees should apply to all applicants, so no one film is favored over another. We understand the financial constraints of making films and the costs of submitting them to Festivals. However, we also feel that submitting for free does not help anyone, as it takes the seriousness out of it. It is essential to research well and submit your film only to the festivals that are a good match and will best help your and your film's careers move forward.

SR Socially Relevant™ Film Festival NY is a film festival that focuses exclusively on socially relevant, human-interest stories that raise awareness of social problems by offering positive solutions through the powerful medium of cinema. SRFF believes that creating a better world free of violence, hate, and crime is possible by raising awareness and knowledge about diverse cultures and the human condition.

SR Socially Relevant™ Film Festival New York shines the spotlight on filmmakers who tell compelling, socially relevant stories across a broad range of social issues without resorting to gratuitous violence or violent forms of filmmaking.

SRFF's human interest stories and character-driven films, including shorts, documentaries, narrative features, web series, children's movies, animation, and scripts in competition, reflect good storytelling.

SR films can be commercially viable and become box office successes when distributed through the proper channels and platforms. We connect filmmakers with our distributor industry partners.

SR Films are enlightening, uplifting, entertaining, but most of all, artistically appealing.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
SRFF - Socially Relevant Film Festival New York is a festival that focuses on socially relevant film content and human interest stories covering a broad range of social issues.

SR aims to showcase socially relevant films of high artistic value that educate, enlighten, entertain, and are commercially viable. Socially Relevant films can be funny, dramatic, romantic, adventurous, comical, suspenseful, intellectually challenging, historical, psychologically inclined, or tell a story that matters. In short, SR films can be anything BUT boring!

THE MISSION of the Festival is to spotlight filmmakers and their films that tackle the social and environmental issues of the day without relying on gratuitous violence, special effects, loud soundtracks, and sensationalism to draw in an audience. The festival supports its filmmakers beyond the weeklong festival, showcasing the selection of films in other venues, events throughout the year, and some major film markets and festivals, such as it has done at the Cannes Film Festival.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Founded by Artistic Director Nora Armani, SRFF is based in New York. SRFF launched in Manhattan, the world's entertainment capital, in March 2014 as the festival's inaugural year at the Quad Cinema in Greenwich Village in New York City.

SRFF has screened an international slate of over 750 films from 40 countries since its inception in 2013. The festival offers industry panels on Distribution, Storytelling, Diversity Casting, Marketing, and Film Finance in partnership with the School of Visual Arts Social Documentary Film School. It organizes spotlight panels on themes such as Empowering Women in the Film Industry, Marketing and Distribution, Low-budget Film Production workshop with SAG-AFTRA, and Filming in New York with the NY Governor's Office for Film and TV Development: script readings and more. New categories were added recently, such as children's films, web series, and animation.

Filmmaker Q&As follow most of the screenings when filmmakers are present when possible. "Meet the Filmmaker" live broadcasts are held regularly and broadcast live on the Festival's YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. The festival is devoted solely to filmmakers who create socially relevant film content. The film selections are made following the submission process on FilmFreeway.

The launch of the Socially Relevant Film Festival coincides with the growing trend of socially conscientious consumers seeking alternatives to invasive films that rely on gratuitous violence and sensationalism to generate box office numbers.

II. SUBMISSION AGREEMENT
(1) By submitting a Film to SRFF for Festival consideration, the submitter (the "Applicant") represents that he or she has obtained consent from any owners, creators, writers, producers, and/or other authorized representatives of the Film whose consent is required to submit the Film to SRFF (the "Film Owners"), and has read, understood and agreed to the Terms.

(8) Winning films are to present, at their own production's expense, the screening or distribution deliverables as requested by the festival venue, the distributor, or exhibitor, as the case might be.

(9) Selected film screeners are not returned unless an SAE is included from the start and a special request is made to this effect.

IV. SUBMISSION

Submission Procedure

(1) All Films submitted under these Terms must be submitted using the procedure outlined herein. SRFF may disqualify or reject any Film that is not submitted in this way. The festival programmers deal only with the person/ persons designated as the submitter in the FilmFreeway submissions and no outside third parties or rights holders.

(2) To submit a film for Festival consideration, an Applicant must:

(a) Complete the registration process at FilmFreeway and pay the required fee as outlined in the different categories.
(b) Provide SRFF with a FilmFreeway online screener for SRFF programming staff to review. SRFF does not accept submissions in any other manner or format. A link on FilmFreeway or a password-protected link on Vimeo, YouTube, etc., is suitable only for the film's trailer, which needs to be downloadable for promotional purposes.

(3) The submitted online material must:
(a) Contain one version only of the Film, in the original language of production, with English subtitles if the original language is not English;
(b) It should be formatted in MPEG-2 video or .mov file format. The submitted screener hard drives or USB keys must:
Be labeled with the following:
(I) the film title,
(ii) production company name, phone number, and address,
(iii) director's name,
(iv) length in minutes, and
(v) FilmFreeway tracking number;
B. be shipped following the instructions sent to selected films.

(4) Applicants should thoroughly test their HDs and USB keys before shipping them. The Applicant is responsible for ensuring that the submitted screener plays in its entirety on an industry-standard projection. If SRFF is unable to view the file or backup, SRFF will attempt, but is under no obligation, to contact the filmmaker to obtain a replacement or to burn a DCP for screening purposes
(5) SRFF will not review multiple versions of a submitted Film. Only one version may be submitted, and if multiple versions are submitted, SRFF will view only the received version.
(6) HD & DCP screeners will not be returned unless self-addressed stamped packaging is included or postage is otherwise paid for.
HDs and DCP screeners sent as deliverables after the film is selected may be returned after the festival ONLY if a self-addressed, postage-paid return envelope is included when sending the deliverables.
(7) All Films must be sent via prepaid shipping. SRFF will not accept 'collect' shipments.
(8) The Festival is not responsible for and will not accept shipments incurring expenses for terminal charges, duties, taxes, or customs brokerage. Applicants should indicate that transportation and customs charges will be billed to the sender on all waybills. Any shipping charges incurred by SRFF will be billed back to the filmmaker.
(9) Films should not be shipped in excessive packaging or with materials other than those requested by SRFF. Please make sure to pack HDs and DCPs properly, as many boxes arrive totally damaged in transit and with no label.
(10) SRFF is not responsible and bears no liability concerning the clearance of shipments through US customs. However, SRFF recommends that Filmmakers sending submissions from outside of the USA take the following steps to increase the chance of successful review by US customs:
a. Include three copies of a commercial invoice (declaration of contents) containing the following information: i. Sender's name, address, and telephone number ii. Recipient's address iii. Title of film and format iv. The runtime of the film v. Fair market value (standard is US $20) vi. Country of manufacture vii. Declaration "Goods on loan for Festival purposes only. No commercial value." viii. Sender's signature.
b. The commercial invoice should be included with the courier waybill. Applicants shipping via international post should affix a customs declaration label to the outside of the package.
c. SRFF prefers FedEx, UPS, or DHL where available. If sent by the regular post office, it is preferable not to make it 'registered mail with signature request' as the post office often does not deliver packages even when we are in, and that obliges us to go to the post office and waste a lot of precious time in queues.
(11) SRFF does not confirm receipt of shipment and is not responsible for lost or misdirected packages. The Applicant is responsible for ensuring that the submission procedure is completed and that SRFF has received the HD/ BluRay/ DCP screener.

Dropbox, WeTransfer, and Google Folders are options for sending screeners and DCPs, but they need to be pre-arranged with the festival and discussed before sending.

V. SCREENPLAYS:
Screenplays should be submitted as completed screenplays (PDF).
As the author of the screenplay, I/we have submitted to SRFF, and I/we warrant, as the sole and exclusive owner/s of all legal rights and titles to it, have absolute authority to submit the screenplay to SRFFNY. I/we will indemnify and hold harmless SRFFNY, its judges, sponsors, and partners, individually and collectively, from and against all claims, demands, losses, damages, costs, liabilities, and expenses, including legal fees arising out of or in connection with any third party claims based on scripts submitted to SRFFNY. SRFFNY winners will permit SRFFNY to use their name and/or likeness in post-competition publicity.
By submitting to the festival, I/we hereby agree to the contents of this form and understand and agree to all the terms and conditions of films and screenplay entries. I have read and agree to the SR Socially Relevant Film Festival New York's Entry Procedure, Rules, Guidelines, and all Terms and Conditions.

(3) SRFF takes all reasonable anti-piracy precautions. While in SRFF's possession, all Films are securely stored and regularly inventoried. Access to Films is limited to SRFFNY staff who require access to screen and consider submissions. No duplication or loaning of Films is permitted. By submitting a Film to SRFFNY, the Submitting Parties hereby release SRFFNY from any liability in the event of theft, unauthorized access or copying, or any breach of copyright of the submitted Film while it is in SRFFNY's possession.

IX. OTHER
(1) SRFF reserves the right to rule, in its sole discretion, on cases and situations not foreseen by these Terms. • The SR Socially Relevant Film Festival is very important since it shows how small festivals become large because of the endeavours, knowledge, perseverance, dedication and conviction of a few. The aim is high and one has to start somewhere. Many examples show us that the seed has to be sown before it can grow. Then it should be nourished and kept alive to expand and blossom. That is what Nora and her Team (many volunteers) are doing so wonderfully. Thank you very much for the great and authentic experience!

We had a great time attending SR Socially Relevant Film Festival thanks to the hard work and excellent communication of Nora and the rest of the SRFF team. Seeing our film, Valley of Exile, on the big screen in the heart of NYC's Greenwich Village was such a treat. The audience was very receptive and the venue was intimate, which made for a wonderful Q&A. The festival hosted various networking events so we had the chance to meet other filmmakers in a casual and friendly setting. The awards ceremony at the National Arts Club was also a great experience and the venue was absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend this lovely film festival with a big heart!

The festival has some very lovely venues in New York for your film. Lots of pre-work to promote the filmmakers. I'm not sure why the film has to be a New York premiere to compete. Great workshops and speakers at the events.
