It seems a day as always when Nodàr, the local notary, comes into the inn with terrible news: some refugees are taking shelter in their little town, in the North East of Italy. In the meanwhile another unexpected news is coming. A charming girl enters into the inn looking for some bottles of water. Davor Marinkovic was born in Serbia and grew up in Vicenza, Italy. He graduated from University of Padua with a dissertation on Steve McQueen and Sean Bobbitt. He directed four short films: Post Fata Resurgo (2012), Get off of my cloud (2013), Portrait (2015), There are shipwrecks even here (2017), Reznica (2022).
We wanted to address the issue of immigration and its reception from an unusual point of view: that of those people who witness the arrival of refugees and don’t understand the reasons behind such phenomenon and why they should take any part in it. As a result, they seek shelter in fear when they would find more comfort in memory. This is what our protagonists do: they remember with nostalgia the times gone by, the link between their land, the water and the waterways, that have always brought goods and people and always will. The director's attempt was to bring the viewer closer to those memories and to those faces by time, to drink wine and play cards with them.
Enclosing almost all the action on a mythical stage like that of the bacaro, the classic venetian inn, also a claustrophilic function of isolation, which is typical of the people of north-eastern Italy,: an isolation of the past from the present, of "us" from "them". In this way, without realizing it, the jailers become prisoners, and the memory almost risks becoming a poison in their wine. If they came out they would find that their memory still lives in the wrecks of the river Sile, it is tangible, and is populated by new people who deserve to be accompanied by these memories.
