Niko Zheng or Zibo Zheng (born November 7th, 1996) is an emerging Chinese filmmaker, Assistant Director and Line Producer. Zheng graduated in Media Arts and Production from the University of Technology Sydney in late 2019. During his undergraduate studies, he directed the short suspense comedy SPY and was the Director Of Photography in the short drama SEPARATIONS.
Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, Zheng decided to return to his hometown, Beijing, China, and work at YU-CHENG-MING-YI Network Technology Co., Ltd. During his tenure, he deeply participated in cooperative video projects related to well-known car manufacturers such as LEXUS, SUBARU, HONDA and TOYOTA GAZOO RACING, participated in and supervised the production of short advertising documentary PROUD OF BOXER and GR PERSONA, and wrote scripts for several TV publicity projects.
In 2022, Zheng returned to Sydney, Australia to continue his postgraduate studies in Master of Moving Image at the University of Sydney. During this period, YOUR BOX, the experimental split-screen short film that was directed by him, was critically acclaimed and exhibited at UNSW and showcased at the USYD MMI 2022 Showcase, and won the Semi-Finalist for the Best Short film award at the Student World Impact Film Festival 2023 (SWIFF).
As the director of our experimental project "YOUR BOX" crew, my Conceptual idea came from the short film Swinger made by the famous Australian director Gregor Jordan back in 1995. And my inspiration for the screen presentation came from a short clip from the movie Schindler's List that Dr. Tamara showed in class.
As for why we choose pink as our 'theme color', it's because I think most people think that pink is a color that is not serious but frivolous, but in the eyes of people who are disappointed with life and the world in front of them is gray. Pink is the most eye-catching color, the color that can make people feel the most sense of existence, and the color that is the most harmless in a tragedy.
Regardless, I am very grateful to my crew for trusting me as an inexperienced director. The experimental short film project gave each of us a platform to express our ideas, but it also confirmed that we still have a lot of skills and knowledge to learn on the road to realize our ideas.
I have learned a lot during the production of YOUR BOX, and I hope our audience will enjoy our experimental project film.
