Director Statement

I am a student of two mediums, cinema and theatre. My first love was the stage, acting all through my formative years, up through college, and now in my professional life. I have been in and directed plays in the last decade and was a member of the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre in New York. My second love, cinema, began as a hobby, grew to an obsession, and now has become my area of professional expertise.

Being a professional of both of these worlds and having spent the better part of my life immersed in them, I have always found that the work I create as a director becomes a blend of the two. I tend to favor bold theatrical lighting and big choices while maintaining intimacy in the stories I tell.

All that being said, I have never directed a project so clearly indebted to my dual sensibilities as "Waiting For." It is as much theatre as it is cinema. The script was intended to be a one act play, so when it was brought to me to make into a film I thought “Why change that?” The story and themes of the script seemed best served by a little theatricality. If it was shot in a location with a bunch of production, background, natural lighting, etc. it may have distracted from the story I wanted to tell. So shooting this on a stripped down stage with just enough elements to indicate the environment would be all we would need for the audience to understand where our characters were. This stripped down approach would then allow the audience to focus completely on our characters and the bond building between them. With that, I believe my team and I have made a short film unlike any other and I can’t wait to share it with audiences.
