vusam Planting a Seed
The film “Vusam: Planting a Seed” depicts Tuban Vusam Cultural Experimental Elementary School located in Daren Township, Taitung County. Why would Principal Te-Kuang Hsiao want to host an experimental school? What brings Principal Hsiao and Professor Wei-Min Hsu of National Pingtung University to meet each other and become collaborating partners to engage in this marathon of education? Is it a beautiful encounter or beginning of mistakes?
“We are having a dream of experimental education. What is it about? We hope all Paiwan students get to know more of their culture and improve their learning performance,” said Professor Wei-Min Hsu.
“It is sad if we as indigenous descendants no longer remember our own mother tongue,” said Principal Te-Kuang Hsiao.
Tuban Vusam Cultural Experimental Elementary School has developed four major focuses on language regeneration, cultural grounding, learning performance improvement, and diverse capacities. From interviews with Principal Te-Kuang Hsiao, Professor Wei-Min Hsu, and teachers, we learned their initiatives and opinions, and observed and recorded students’ learning conditions.
