Experiencing Interruptions?

¡vamos, simbiosis! - Reconnecting humans to the sea through the arts and sciences

The sisters Annika and Stephanie Guse initiated the arts & science project ¡vamos, simbiosis! at a climate hotspot at the Mediterranean Sea. As a biologist and an artist they want to find out what the merge of arts and science can do to support ocean health in times of climate change. Together with 50 scientists, artists, students, local stakeholders they joined an on-site experiment in Spain. Within a specially designed Symbiosis Studio and through artistic methods they created a collective brain, experiencing and reflecting the relation of humans to the sea on multiple levels. Together the group created artworks and research to raise ocean literacy, public awareness, and transform marine science.
The film gives insights in how arts and sciences can complement each other - comparable to a research practise before the 20th century when arts and sciences were inextricably linked. It illustrates how to immerse into a community and create a place and spirit to practise science and arts together.

(The outcomes of the project are documented in a follow-up film (2023) about the exhibition at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich in which students and teachers reflect on the need for tangible science in the Anthropocene. Results and the special artistic methods of this project are also presented within papers and conferences, such as Konferenz der Zukünfte, Berlin (2023) and Overcoming Obstacles to Climate Change Mitigation, UCL, Belgium (2024).)

Director Biography - Axel Warnstedt, Tobias Brehmer

As a freelance cameraman and producer, I've worked on every continent in the world and filmed in extraordinary locations such as Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the Serengeti. My clients include international TV stations as well as numerous film production companies and well-known companies.

Before training as a cameraman, I studied ecology and environmental process engineering and the environment and sustainability are still very close to my heart. Several of my film projects have won awards. That means a lot to me.

I live with my family in Berlin, am the father of three great children and a passionate handball player. Team play, honesty and integrity, appreciative and solution-orientated cooperation are very important to me. I also live these values in my work, because good camera work means much more to me than just taking good pictures.

Director Statement

¡vamos, simbiosis! is a project that I involved in because I felt that working towards a symbiotic relation between humans and the sea is an inspiring idea. Co-director Tobias Brehmer and me were deeply immersed in the ¡vamos, simbiosis! group and their activities. Therefore, we conducted the interviews and scenes not from the observer position, but from an insider perspective. The film shows positions of individual artists and scientists towards the sea, and how they inspire each other and the public to contribute to a sustainable future. It also captures a special community spirit created through arts practise and diving into the society of Águilas.
