Valeria Vicente is a Mexican audiovisual artist. She is the author, director, photographer and editor of video art, experimental cinema, live cinema and music video pieces. She works with the voice, the still and moving image, digital video and its derivatives as means of expression where she uses analog and digital techniques of appropriation, intervention, destruction and reorganization, challenging the limits of the “correct” use of technology by making use of the act, live and improvisation, as well as post-production and remixing, whose search in audiovisual art delves into the creation of environments of narrative liminality in which the extremes of the common and the fantastic or indescribable coexist, causing polysemy in each piece, repairing in the meaning of reality, memory and its relationship with data, its corruption and its translation into the human condition.
She has been a speaker, exhibited, projected and performed, part of her work in various spaces, museums and festivals in Mexico, the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America such as; The “Flower of Life” program from the exhibition Frida & Diego: Love & Revolution at the Art Gallery of South Australia (2023), Glitchart is dead at the KK Berge Art Gallery (2022), VivaTech at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles (2021), the José Soriano Morelense Museum of Contemporary Art (2020) and the National Museum of World Cultures (2019).
In live events such as at ExTeresa Arte Actual (2023), the broadcast of Live Cinema México from the Casa del Tiempo of the UAM (2022), in the 2020 Mexico-Japan hybrid edition of the MUTEK International Digital Creativity Festival and in the Edition 16 (2019) forming the duo of visualists; Ultrachina. Also as a VJ at the Cervantino International Festival (2019), NRMAL, PANGEA (2020) and HIPNOSIS (2022).
Her work has been recognized by international film and video festivals; Bogotá Experimental Film Festival (2021) in Colombia, Hallucinea Film Festival (2021) in France, with special mention in FUSE - Film Under Severe Experiment (2021) in Croatia, Future Traditions (2020) College of Fine Arts, Texas, USA and in the Helios Sun Poetry Film Festival (2023), NEOS Fest (2023), Cinegro (2023), Celaya Experimental Film Fest (2022 and 2023), Fotogenia Festival (2021) and ULTRAcinema (2020, 2021 and 2023) in Mexico.
She has directed, edited and photographed music videos such as “(ISS) Estación Espacial Internacional” (2022) for El Universo, “The Depressing Sounds Of The Witch” (2020) for the Ecuadorian band Sexores, or “Wabi Sabi” (2019) for Shax was a photography assistant in the video dance “The birds gather inside you” (2019), among other recording projects.
She is co-founder, coordinator and content curator in the Latin American network of experimental videographers VIDEÓNICA which produces activities that have been based in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Mexico City in which emphasis is placed on sharing tools, techniques, methods and actors in the experimentation of signals and video flows.
She recently obtained a diploma in Cinema and Digital Media from the CC Ollin Yoliztli, CMM, CCD and PROCINE, she is studying the last year of her degree in Graphic Communication Design at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana with a specialty in Audiovisual Media, she works on a recurring basis in lighting and production design direction for theater and live events and teaches practical workshops on experimentation with still and moving images independently online, but which have also had venues such as the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ciudad Universitaria, UNAM and at the Latin American festival WASI FEST as well as versions in courses for children in particular.
