un pas de coté
This is the story of Billie. She is sitting alone in the dark and remembers what happened when she fell in love with a sad clown and they left Europe for America . Stuck for twenty-four hours in a suburban Midwest town after missing their bus, they travel by foot throughout the isolated space, real and dreamed, meeting locals, images of Art, poetry and the illusion of the american dream.

Gaelle Jaunay-Desroches (born may 8th, 1984) is a french-american performing artist. After studying at NY university and Beaux Arts de Paris with Claude Closky, she has shown her installation videos in several festivals worldwide (European media art festival, mediafest, videonale, oberhausen). Lately she’s been asked to direct music videos ( Art and Craft Canada ) and has been working many odd jobs in order to continue this film. This is her first long feature.
The film explores a poetic and realistic way of being a woman today ( through Billie’s voice over played by actress Kathryn Hunter ), what is it to be a foreigner as each character A and B encounter struggle with their identities and also what is it to look at a landscape through Art pieces and poetry.
America, as a character in the movie, not shown as a perfect idealistic dream but as it is in the wilderness, and repetitive suburban town.
We were lucky enough after arriving in Minnesota to receive help from a local crew and sponsors in Minneapolis. Arturo Tay came from Mexico in order to produce the film and Jacob Swanson arrived from Duluth to be our cinematographer. Funding was assembled in less than 3 months and we started shooting over a year to finally edit the film back in Europe. The actress Kathryn Hunter joined us for the voice over and poetess Eileen Myles gave us the right to her fantastic "An american Poem", we also contacted several american artists to be featured in the film.
The Art pieces, the poetry, extracts of sociological or historical works underline this reality and gives us additional means to better know and develop a critical mind which the characters are also trying to achieve with their journey.
By these means I wanted the film to reflect the idea of offering the possibility to think the social, cultural and physical environment surrounding them and not be satisfied by an illusion of love or the promise of the american dream.
