We live in a world surrounded by screens, almost everything is digital, connected and on-demand. We need to put on our headphones while jogging, we are compelled to check our phones at every single break we have. The average person living in a city doesn't have the patience to just be anymore, we have an urge to stay connected and interacting all the time, otherwise we feel we would miss out on something. Our modern society is addicted to social media, we feed of likes and slide on people.

This environment inspired me to make an adaptation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, replacing the shadows on the wall of the original myth by social media because that's how we perceive the world nowadays. I don’t think this ultra-connected world is necessarily bad but I do believe that some parts of being human are getting lost in this reality.

I want the audience to feel connected with my main character and with the story, and that is why this film was designed to be displayed on mobile phones.

Director Biography - Raphael Toth

I am a Brazilian animator with a lot of experience in motion graphics and broadcast. Before coming to the Netherlands I worked for a very large Brazilian TV channel called TV Globo. Although I normally use digital techniques for my animations, I wish to explore and further develop my 2D traditional animation skills.
My passions are animation, music, film and storytelling. Because political and social issues are very relevant to me, I try to address them in my own work whenever possible.

Because of ‘always-on’ technologies like the smartphone, today our attention span is very short. Everyone is doing a lot of things and nothing at the same time, and that is causing our society to behave differently than the previous generation. This digital environment that is making our brains mix the real with the virtual inspired me to create UNLINK, my graduation project.
