Director Statement

Unbound as a film began in a meeting between David Johnson, Aliceia Dawkins and Stephanie Hazle in the summer of 2016. We knew we were going to make a short film with a female lead that fought against the violence faced by many of our women but didn't know the elements of the plot as yet. This sparked several months of writing and pre-production where the story and characters were developed. It wasn't until we heard the testimonies of Christina Milford from the Pregnancy Resource Center of Jamaica that we knew to include sex trafficking and sexual violence as a major theme. All three of us had a concerted interest in the rise in reported acts of sexual violence against girls and women in our society; along with the introduction to Christina Milford who informed us first hand of various cases of victimization of girls who are now under the care of her shelter - our perspective became more focused as we sought to show the linkage across issues such as sexual violence towards women, poverty and the sex trade. Two questions arose that we wanted to address: 1. Can women be free from sexual trauma? and 2. How should a man respond to this and other related issues? These are the questions that UNBOUND seeks to answer through film.
