transFORMING the LANDSCAPE
This short film deals with the urgency of LISTENING, SPEAKING, making collective DECISIONS and ACTIONS for the future transFORMATION of a landscape, through the engagement between local people and institutions, all responsible for that transFORMATION. Each place has its landscape, an inhabited space that contains characteristic natural and cultural elements created and experienced by its inhabitants. The landscape is where nature, city, people, and their experiences meet. A deep understanding of the landscape is crucial to guide a sustainable future as a collective and systemic fact. We can only really understand the landscape by talking to the people who live in it and experience it.
PARATY is a WORLD CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE SITE that has been under pressure, whether by the excessive exploitation of tourism, or uncontrolled urban growth, among other factors that negatively impact its landscape. The risk of landscape degradation means the possible loss of resources, quality of life, and the landscape's essence.
Given its value to the local people, Brazil, and the world, it is worth asking:
Whose landscape? For whom? The future is TODAY. transFORMING is necessary!

PAULO MAIA is a Brazilian linguist, Ph.D., Lecturer at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and Coordinator of the Multimedia Education Group – Faculty of Linguistics. Furthermore, his filmography states the value of traditional communities' practices and the urgency of raising social issues, mainly related to exclusion and inequalities.
This short film came from the urgency of providing room for the "landscape voices" to be heard, fostering a genuinely positive social, environmental, and urban transformation with particular attention to the traditional people of a place.
It was produced at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ – Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism – FAU / Postgraduate Programme in Urban Planning – PROURB
in partnership with the Multimedia Education Group / Faculty of Linguistics.
