Kati Kelli is a Los Angeles based experimental video artist known for her surrealist approach to online media and cutting edge, culture jamming satire.
Using baby dolls, caricatures, and maximalist editing techniques, Kati Kelli deconstructs her online identity while reveling in the toxic allure of social media.
GQ Magazine called Kati's videos "some of this decade’s funniest, most cutting, and truly most bizarre works of art."
"The sentiment behind “total body removal surgery” is to lash out and poke fun at the pressure put on women to become one with the product. Tippy is a walking, talking advertisement. A wind-up doll for sponsored content. Not only do we structure our lives around products, but now people are expected to present and sell themselves as the products.
This film aims to break through the glam to expose the negatives of being an “aspirational” being. For Tippy, the strive for perfection is almost a form of suicide. In her own universe, she is idolized. However, from our side of the screen, we are left to watch in horror as Tippy transitions from “It-Girl” to materialistic “It-Thing!” We watch an influencer become the victim of her own influence. Poor, little Tippy.
I believe we need more disruptive content in the world. Social media does a killer job at creating a dense pseudo-reality that screams “You’re the last person on Earth who hasn’t joined this cool new world!” The marketing industry has its finger on the pulse of pop culture and I want to make loud art about it.
As we’re baited more and more with “user-generated content”, it’s difficult to separate friends from sponsored promos. Every time we scroll were unknowingly ingesting a multi-media cocktail of manipulation. By making a joke of “fads” and pop culture trends, I hope this dramatic caricature allows people to take a step back and question what they consume.
I feel that this propaganda fuels our desire to destroy and rebuild our identities in the image of shiny, new, niche fads. Social influencers like Tippy bridge the gap between celebrity and everyday people, causing the pressure placed on celebrities to bleed into mundane life. No one is safe. The ANXIETY IS ON, baby!"
