Keyra English is currently a junior Cinema and Media Studies major at Carleton College. Under KE Animation, the independent animation studio they founded in the summer of 2020 - Keyra has written, directed, and animated two short films (Wake Up, Jaleela and Fear Rules This Forest) with several more in the works.
As a child, Keyra’s active imagination took them on many unique adventures and explorations. Once they discovered drawing, these stories soon filled every sketchbook and notebook they could get their hands on.
Today, Keyra brings that imagination and love for visual storytelling to everything they create as an animator and filmmaker.
The origins of To Cross the Sunset date back to my early days as a storyteller, and the film’s evolution closely mirrors my own artistic development. One challenge I encountered was the need to find the heart of the story and the will to discard anything that distracted from that core. What helped me keep my focus was the experience I had at a young age watching my parents grieve the death of my grandmother, and research into dying god myths. The result, my most emotionally honest film yet.
