Director Statement

Time Sleeper is my feature directorial debut, and the first (very small) step in the process of achieving my vision of merging genre with spirituality in my films. The main theme in Time Sleeper is that of forgiveness. Our lead character, Sarah, blames herself completely for the accidental death of her son, and finds it difficult to forgive herself, despite going for confession with her local parish priest daily.

Forgiveness is an important concept in Christianity. In fact, it is the central piece to it: Jesus Christ died on the cross to forgive the sins of mankind. Forgiveness in this sense allows Christians to start over, and gives them yet another chance at becoming better human beings. And yet there are questions; Are there totally unforgivable acts? Would said offenses be considered unforgivable in an objective or subjective sense? In Christianity, if everyone can be forgiven, then no act is too heinous, too loathsome, or otherwise too detestable to be absolved, as long as believers are open to accepting forgiveness, learning from their mistakes and becoming better versions of themselves.

So, on the one hand we have the theological aspect of the film, but this is a genre film as well: Science Fiction. Time Sleeper involves a special kind of time travel that involves transporting the subject`s consciousness on a one way trip back into the past. It also involves computer hacking to obtain the necessary drug requirements from a billion dollar corporation.

Drawing from classic sci-fi films such as Solaris and Blade Runner, as well as films with deep theological themes including The Seventh Seal and A Man for All Seasons, Time Sleeper will feature a meditative, dreamlike atmosphere and a powerful story of forgiveness that is left to the viewer to digest and interpret on their own.
