Time and Tide
The beaches of Hartlepool, in the North East of England, are where seacoalers have worked and prospered for centuries. Steve and Keith are the last two seacoalers working today, and despite the government phasing out coal in under two years’ time, they remain proud of their craft and the life it has given them.

Over the past five years, documentary filmmaker Caleb Yule has amassed a body of work that conveys the experiences of ordinary people, often humanising groups societally defined in a reductive manner.
Committed to spending extended periods with each of his subjects - often without a camera - Yule’s emphasis on relationship building has invariably led to visceral depictions of the everyday. In letting those onscreen articulate their truths, an honesty and warmth runs to the core of each film, allowing each story to be told in a manner true to those at the centre of it.
Yule has received an array of recognition, including Official Selections to Raindance, London Short Film Festival, and Aesthetica Short Film Festival. Yule’s sophomore documentary, OTHER PLANS, won Best Short Film at Brighton CINECITY Film Festival.
In 2018 he co-founded Stories of Note, a production house dedicated to recording and amplifying stories that are seldom heard.
"When I first began pursuing this project, it seemed like an opportunity to document a way of making a living that few people are aware of. However, I began getting to know Steve and Keith and came to understand their love, passion, and pride for seacoaling. As a result, this project became less about documenting a gruelling and outdated occupation, and instead about doing something to preserve an independent spirit and a community that has persisted despite a nationwide-increasing estrangement of people from work." - Caleb Yule
