Juan José Avelar is an upcoming Chicano filmmaker from California’s Central Valley. Many of his works are inspired by his culture, religion and experiences as a first generation Mexican-American. Through his films Juan offers his voice as he invites the audience to explore the conversation about racial injustices and history of the United States of America. Juan José Avelar has a background in documentary filmmaking and photography. His influences include Sergio Leone, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu and the Coen brothers.
Growing up in America with Mexican parents I had two cultures influencing my upbringing. This duality of culture influenced the kaleidoscope perspective to my world. In this digital film I explore and embrace the beauty of being an American of Mexican descent.
