Director Statement

“Of all the film genres, science fiction and fantasy are my favorites. They are the best ways to explore social commentaries and far-reaching ideas that otherwise would not have ever been explored through the art of film. With this story, I explore current issues our culture faces in regard to identity crises and the struggles of maintaining one’s individuality.

This short film, THE SOMEONE delves deeply into the humanity of a normal, human shape-shifter. After changing faces and impersonating others for so long, Jack, the protagonist, has lost track of his own personality. He suffers immense personal agony because he doesn’t remember who he is supposed to be. He goes on in life using this power only for small, selfish reasons. As the lovely Susan character, he loves to swindle guys for free drinks at the bar. He also loves to routinely skip out on bills from restaurants.

Jack has lost all ambition and goes through life without any purpose, until he meets another shape-shifter with this same power. Does the new shape-shifter use his power differently than Jack? What will happen next? How will their relationship progress?

I have used this short film to begin the complicated exploration of Jack’s character, but I fully intend to go further down the rabbit hole and hopefully come back up again when I shoot the full-length feature film.”
