Me
My ambition is simply to be unique and original. I am inspired by all forms of art including painting, music, acting, dance, photography, and the written word. It is unlikely anyone has talents in all of these themselves which is why I use film to interpret my love for each.
Most of all, I want to connect with people and make them experience what I am experiencing - the way I feel, the way I see the world, and subsequently how I can project this into something as complex as the commercial industry. Whether I am completely mainstream in terms of output or I decide to work in more artful areas I go with my head, my heart, and personal tastes in order to get where and what I want.
Starting with writing and subsequently shooting my own narrative films, I have learnt so much about how to get a film made and integrate myself with audiences and employers. I feel from the Director's standpoint and point of view I have experienced every other role and have the ability to work in them.
Ultimately, all I want is to have my voice heard and be allowed to tell the stories I want too, whether they be personal, commercial, or for somebody else. I am truly committed to becoming the filmmaker I want to be and nothing will stop me from doing it.
Film Noir as a genre over a style has always fascinated me. I believe it is a genre above simply ‘Crime’ or ‘Mystery Thriller’ when the story is told cinematically. I find it oozes with passion, romance, danger, and fear – dating back to 1940s such as the films of Orson Welles, Raymond Chandler books, all the way to modern pastiche like Batman comics, or Frank Miller’s Sin City (2005) and its sequel.
Film styles reinvent themselves and like fashion, everything goes around in a circle. I find this type of story is fresh and has not had a renaissance for several years. As a filmmaker, I like to surprise myself as well as the audience in what can be achieved. I set out to make this project with no budget and no real narrative. My aim was to create something technically of a high standard and really push myself as a cameraman independently. I was hungry to capture something that felt authentic of a period film, whether it be touches of the modernistic of French New Wave, romantic classic Hollywood or otherwise. This film also gave me the chance to do everything and teach myself once again how to battle through every part of the directing process. I am proud of the work I have done and I hope the final product does reflect my qualities as a filmmaker. As Ridley Scott said: “Go out with your camera and just do it”. It is influences like this that make me passionate about the industry.
