one and together
Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) in the 1930s. Though its foundations are based on many old disciplines in samurai training, aikido is primarily a self-improvement system. It can be translated as “the way of harmony with energy”. The aim of aikido is not defeating the other, but defeating the negative characteristics in one’s own mind.

He was born in 1984 in Istanbul. He completed his undergraduate degree in Radio, Television and Cinema in 2006, and doctorate of arts in Cinema and Television at Marmara Uni. in 2015. During that period, he made short films which were selected by various film festivals. He has been a faculty member at Istanbul Beykent Uni., Faculty of Communication, Visual Communication Design Department since 2016.
When I first started learning aikido in 2016, I did not imagine that this art would take me on such a journey. I soon realized with surprise that aikido was shaping me not only physically but also mentally, and I decided to make a film about it.
Unlike others, aikido is a non-violent martial art. “Harmony” is the essence of its philosophy and its techniques are based on the redirection of force. Beyond that, aikido is a system of self-improvement. It primarily aims at the physical, mental and spiritual development of the person.
Nebi Vural is a world-class aikido master. Vural is a student of Tamura (1933-2010), one of the direct students of Ueshiba (1883-1969), the founder of aikido. In a way, this film is a work of gratitude and respect to Nebi Sensei who devoted himself to the art of aikido.
Through local human stories this documentary aims to tell aikido universally. The subjects mentioned in the documentary are entirely based on experiential knowledge. Therefore, this film can guide its audience only to the beginning of the path. The audience must walk the rest of the path on their own.
