Director Biography - Bailey James

Bailey James is 19 years old, and grew up in Duncanville, Texas, where she manifested her interests in performing, particularly acting, singing, and dancing, primarily in church. Furthering her interests, throughout middle school and high school, she attended the Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy, studying theatre, and was ranked regionally and nationally for speech and acting competitions. She’s recently finished her 1st year at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, studying acting, and has continued winning numerous awards in her craft, most recently becoming a 2019 YoungArts Merit Winner and 2018 Honorable Mention Winner in Theatre and a two time gold medalist in Dramatic Arts at the National NAACP’s AACT-SO Competition. This is the first film she’s ever acted in, yet alone, crafted in all aspects, and she wants to thank God for giving her this poem in a dream, originally intended to be spoken at an upcoming performance, and giving her the constant need to manifest it into what it now is: a short film.

Director Statement

I don’t consider myself a writer, or even a filmmaker. Not totally. Not even an actress. What I am, is a storyteller, and every little thing that encompasses it. I’m interested in telling stories that many girls who looks just like me, would debate if they’re even worth telling. Because what they don’t seem to realize, is that they are modern day black history. This story, that may be arguably insignificant, is us NOW. In the flesh. And it, along with our many others, deserves your attention. So please, open your minds, swallow 7 minutes of possible discomfort, and if it can, let this move you. Thank you.
