so quiet so loud

The film „so quiet so loud“ follows the 4 year old Maja in her everyday life. Next to her playing, drawing and crawling all day long, she also must visit the hospital and join learning enhancement activities, because she suffers from cancer and has a special form of trisomy 19. In order to get to know the person beyond their diagnosis, the film does not focus on her physical features but is dedicated to the smaller moments of her life. The observing style of the film gives an intimate inside view of the life of a family and shows how love, comprehension and patience can shape a child’s life.

Director Statement

Films which show illness or disability often make a spectacle out of them. But once you get in touch with these topics you quickly realize that it is anything but a spectacle. It is day to day life. It means waking up and being in a good or bad mood. It means fighting with your siblings and being excited about ice cream. It means not knowing what the future holds and therefore taking every moment as it comes. After watching the film, many people turn to me and ask me “so what is Maja's diagnosis?”. I always reply asking them what it would change if they knew the exact answer. I wanted to get to know the girl beyond her diagnosis and get an inside view of a family who is doing everything to give their children as much normalcy as possible.
