Song of the Starslayer

For centuries the Kingdom of Ashelon has toiled under the yolk of the Dragon, but not all will bow to the will of their Draconian overlords. An ancient order of knights devoted to resisting the might of Draconia has established a stronghold in the mountain halls of Fellcroft, and now wages war against the Dragon's empire. In the midst of this struggle, a dishonored knight seeks to restore his fortunes whilst winning the hand of the king's daughter in marriage. But this restless soul will soon find himself on a quest that will test his loyalties and decide the fate of the empire for good or ill.

Director Biography - Robert Towne

A resident of Albuquerque New Mexico and native of El Paso Texas, Robert Towne began making films as a teenager in high school. Starting off with movies that featured cardboard spaceships and wooden swords, Robert has never shied away from taking on ambitious stories typically within the genres of science fiction, adventure, and fantasy. Over the years, Robert has built a team that pushes independent guerilla filmmaking to its limits, maximizing whatever limited resources are available to create stories of epic scope and scale with minimal to no use of CGI. Robert's favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. His favorite films include the original Star Wars trilogy and the westerns of Sergio Leone.

Director Statement

For perhaps as long as I have been making films, I have aspired to create an epic-scale fantasy movie. The production of "Song of the Starslayer" was a 3 year undertaking filled with challenges that would trouble even the most well funded Hollywood production. Ray Niemira, the actor who played King Myklos, passed away in the middle of production, forcing a rewrite of several parts of the first 2 acts. The film features his last performance. Ben Kullman, who played the film's main villain, was actually stabbed and ended up in the ER after a climactic sword fight. But none of us even knew he was injured before the word "cut" was heard, as the hardcore actor continued the scene without flinching to the very end. Despite these and other challenges sure to come with a film of this scale, a volunteer cast and crew came together with a coalition of dedicated nerds from across the southwest US to pull off a legendary quest. The story may fall into a genre often marked by Hollywood blockbusters, but the making of it was about as indie as it gets. It's the type of film made for fans of comic books, video games, conventions, and pulp-fantasy and science fiction novels. Except this wasn't made by Hollywood, it was made by the fans.
