so disgusting!
so disgusting! is the journey of a woman trying to live her best life in New York City. She begins as a 2D character in a 3D world, clearly unhappy and out of sorts in her studio apartment. At the prospect of free food and drinks, she decides to attend a bachelorette party where she is confronted with a group of hyper-femme, put-together women all bonding over phallic games and drinks. In the end, she faces her isolation and celebrates her differences. In a build-up of frustrated, sweaty energy, she breaks through her 2D limits and into a 3D land of self-acceptance as a giant, self-actualized pizza-eating woman.

The story for my thesis film, so disgusting! has been evolving over the years of my life. Growing up with two sisters I got to see how angry, funny, messy, and multidimensional women can be. I then grew up and began to understand that these traits are not the expectation for the “ideal” woman. The “ideal” woman is the kind of woman who attracts a man. A woman who is contained, put-together, polite, thin, and never angry or gross. In this film, the bachelorette party and the goal of getting married represent some idea of success; economic stability which is one of the rewards for fitting yourself into the box of the ideal woman. Our character is driven to the party by the desire for free food, a symbol of survival and stability. She arrives at the party and decides it is not worth it, the cost of this definition of femininity is too high. She tries to escape, but not before trying to be recruited into the world of the bachelorette party women. She shrinks in the face of their intimidation, is trapped, breaks free, and is transformed. She lands in a vortex and realizes that there’s a way out. In the process, she runs through all the ideas and limits that held her back in the past and breaks into a peaceful city where she is a three-dimensional character. She sits on the Brooklyn Bridge eating pizza brought to her by the creatures of New York. With some magic and help from others, she is actualized and realizes that she is self-sufficient, authentic, and free.
