Sex, Sermons and Politics
Brazil aims to build and sell an image of its society where sexuality is liberated and sexual orientation is highlighted and even respected. But it is also the most religious country in the world, and this same Brazil reveals itself as a very conservative country, resistant to dealing with sexuality issues. Every day a woman dies as a result of the prohibition on abortion and more than half of the murders of homosexuals and transsexuals in the world occurs in Brazil. Following the trail of Jandira, a young woman who lost her life after undergoing an illegal abortion, from the place of her disappearance to the political sphere, this film provides a critical look into the paradox of Brazilian sexuality and the rise of conservatism and religion, such as radical evangelicalism, which penetrates the government itself and bodes a dark future for women's and LGBT rights in the country.
Covering a two-year period in Brazil, the film gained access to the MPs and evangelical preachers who led the impeachment of the former President of the Republic, Dilma Rousseff. This violent political event marked the beginning of the social and economical crisis in which the country is now drowning.
One of the characters of the film, the congressman Jair Bolsonaro, recently became the leading contender for the presidential elections on October 28th and is seen as the "Brazilian Trump". These upcoming elections will put Brazilian politics under scrutiny this year, and our documentary provides context for understanding how the current political situation has developed.

The directors studied cinema together at a fine arts school in France. Aude settled in Brazil in 2007, where she first documented Afro-Brazilian rites and the youth in the favelas being killed by police.
Michael, a journalist in a local newspaper and later a video-artist focusing on the role of the media, traveled to Brazil in 2009 to film and edit Aude’s first documentary. Aude and Michael have collaborated on six documentary films, such as Rio, Year Zero, which follows the campaign of a Brazilian politician who received death threats due to his fight against corruption, and in which they shared their viewpoints on the country and developed a taste for documenting characters who fight for their rights against injustice and violence.
