Joshua Kaufman is an independent director, writer, and visual artist in New York City. His recent work includes three short films: LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, HOLD, and SITUATIONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES; and two plays: BACKWARD PEOPLE, and UNCHILDING.
In his “Ode to Hotel Rooms”, James Parker asks, “As you mingle with this careful anonymity, as you drift and lightly settle into this fancy or not-so-fancy non-place, what might happen?”
The protagonist in RESERVATIONS delicately walks the line between fully exposing herself and entirely withholding any hint of her desperation. Jump cuts disrupt the continuity of her evening, and further obscure the nature of each conversation. The result is a deceptively simple portrait of a meandering evening spent alone.
With RESERVATIONS, our focus was on the economy of storytelling as well as subtext. How can a portrait be rendered by examining how someone acts in both public and private? Who is the true self? In this case, the ambiguity points to the messier reality: both are authentic. Or, perhaps, neither.
