A journalist asks his second father to make for him an object for a funeral ritual. With it he will try to close a long and obsessive investigation about the case of Georg Welzel, one of the last two men executed by garotte during Franco’s dictatorship in Spain.

Director Biography - Raúl Riebenbauer

Raúl Riebenbauer (Valencia, 1969) is a documentary filmmaker, writer and journalist.

One of his main projects is the investigation that he carried out for a decade on one of the last executed in the Franco dictatorship. The result was the non-fiction book The Silence of Georg. In 2021 the definitive version was published in the editorial La Vorágine.

He also investigated the famous photograph of the Capa y Taro militiaman and narrated it in the documentary The Shadow of the Iceberg, co-directed with Hugo Doménech.

During the years of the crisis he lived in Lima (Peru), where he taught documentary and investigative journalism workshops at various universities and institutions. There he was also the author of the book Yachaykusun and co-author of Lessons from the Earth, both commissioned by the Swiss cooperation, on adaptation to climate change in communities.

Since 2017 he is focused on directing documentary films.

Director Statement

Cuando Raúl Riebenbauer y su productora El Señor Bauer presentaron a Rinoceronte Films su proyecto, creímos que su historia debía seguir conociéndose más allá del libro que había escrito sobre el tema hacía unos años. Surgió así la posibilidad de recuperar, en esta ocasión desde el formato audiovisual, un episodio trágico y oscuro de la historia de España: parte de la vida y el desenlace de Georg Welzel, uno de los dos últimos ejecutados a garrote vil por el régimen de Franco.

Uno de los aspectos de mayor interés en el planteamiento de este proyecto es que no se limita a estudiar el caso desde una perspectiva histórica o política. Su búsqueda se abre a realidades mucho más complejas y difíciles de plasmar, que conforman la extrañeza y las contradicciones de la vida, como son los (des)azares, los deseos, las pérdidas, los anhelos, la familia o la búsqueda.

Mediante un trabajo de tiempos entrelazados y recurriendo a imágenes del pasado —cuando aconteció aquella historia, en los años 60 y 70—, a vídeos grabados durante la investigación de Riebenbauer, en la década del 2000, y al propio presente, se le ha dado forma a una propuesta que recuerda que la historia y la memoria son pliegues complejos que hay que desentrañar para que formen parte de nuestro legado.
