Tai French, a Los Angeles native and Founder/CEO of Vintage City Entertainment, has set ablaze the theatre scene as an envelope-pushing writer/director from 2010 to present day. Selling out Los Angeles theatres from 100 seat venue The Victory Theatre to the 300 seat Barnsdall Gallery Theatre numerous times, she always returned to her roots in the world of film.
In 2004 at age 17, French wrote, directed, and edited her first feature film, BEAST, that became an official selection at the Pan African Film Festival in 2006. The film was based on a true story of domestic violence in a teenage relationship that ended in a tragic death. The interest in French’s account of the story caught the attention of many different people, one of them being a college professor at Santa Monica College. The professor asked if French could do a re-edit of the film to make it an interactive educational tool, and she agreed. 11 years later--Present Day, the educational version of the film is still used in the curriculum at Santa Monica College.
In tandem with her 9 hit stage plays, more of Tai French’s work includes the comedic 2012 web series, “I Hate My Co-Worker,” which she created, wrote, directed, and starred in the 10-episode series. The series was selected into the 2013 LA WebFest and won for Outstanding Comedic Performance. In Fall 2015, French’s urban crime drama web series, “The Molding Maverick Mason,” began streaming. This particular series highlighted the range in French’s writing and directing styles which won over her loyal and growing audience.
Currently, French has various spec scripts written in which she plans to pitch to networks of all platforms: streaming services, cable, and network TV. Meanwhile, she continues to crank out new works on screen and onstage.
I love telling everyday people's stories with a fly-on-the-wall aesthetic to it, and at times, a hint of surrealism. I'm most influenced by people and how they act when influenced by a particular stimuli, be it relationships--toxic or unrequited, or a series of unfortunate events. This scope gives a character-driven aspect to my storytelling . I aim for my art to connect and inspire audiences, and to provoke thought & conversation along the way.
