Born in Morocco in 1960, Rock news journalist for 10 years, feminist, militant, visual artist and screenwriter for 15 years at « Initiative Films » I've written and helped co-write at least 20 feature films and a dozen short films.
I led screenwriting worskhops through the Ministry of Foreign affairs in Lebanon, Maghreb in Africa which has allowed me to mix with filmmakers from all over the world, and to mature.
In 2010 I decided to start directing, I filmed portraits of borderline artists, documentaries in India with Dalits (untouchables) and was involved in a video diary of an anorexic girl which might have save her live.
From this direct contact with human experience and suffering grew a determination to write my own stories. Born out of this energy, and despite little funding, came several films, the best of which are: Trust Me 13' / Ours bipolaire (Bi-polar bear) 11' /Pure Héroine (Pure Heroine) 62'/ Dette d'amour (Love's Debts) 25' /...created for festivals.
4 mid-length films L' amour j'arrête (I quit loving)/ Naissance des Fantômes (The Birth of Ghosts)/ Fils de Biche (Son of a Deer)/ 3 lascars (3 Little Rascals)
and one feature film which is in the final stages of editing by 'Tout le monde est quelqu'un', the courageous organisation in the heart of which 'Let's go films', a mini production company, was created in 2010 and which is in constant growth.
My obsession as a filmmaker : To hunt down alterity in conflicts, where rivals find ways to assertivity: an alternative to flight or fight behaviour. Otherness found through risking confrontation, at once both uncomfortable yet constructive.
This overwhelming and realistic attitude, far from being mushy or looking for a happy ending or from extreme pessimism is a litteral act of resistance.
I film power struggles in order to expose the characters to realisations about their own self awareness and free will.
I believe that looking directly and simply at these harsh truths, stirs a certain sense of intimacy and allows for human dignity to bubble forth, for the sake of seeing within a fleeting eternity - stories about beings in process, becoming other than themselves.
This elusive challenge, requiring great precision, gives me over and over again the desire to film and to act as witness through fiction to that grandness of which human beings can be capable. Without sentimentality!
