Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring

The Documentation Art video piece Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring shows the tree which is constantly being painted over on a single painting throughout the circulation of four seasons ranging from spring to summer to autumn to winter to spring.... This transforming process is imperceptible in the actual painting, but it is a real part of painting, which is expressed in the Documentation Art video as the painting’s depth.

This video is synchronized with the rhythm of Migung (The Labyrinth) by Byungki Hwang who is a Korean Gayageum musician. Gayageum is a traditional Korean zither with 12 strings. According to Hwang, Migung is an experimental Gayageum piece which expresses the life cycle of human beings from birth to death. As the change of the tree is synchronized with Migung, the distinction between the subject and the object is dissolved in anthropocosmic sensibility through the process of painting.

Director Biography - Hyeyoung Maeng

Hyeyoung was born in South Korea, and earned a PhD degree in Contemporary Arts at Lancaster University. Her PhD research investigates the boundaries between painting and film, and explores the potentiality of digital documentation of the process of Korean Bunche painting as an independent fine art piece from the final stage of the painting. This practice also re-invent French philosopher Gilles Deleuze's theory of art as Transcendental Realism.

Hyeyoung earned a BFA and an MFA in Korean painting at Kyung Hee University, South Korea. After 10 years working experience as a practicing artist, she came to San Francisco in 2010 to study contemporary art at the San Francisco Art Institute. This trans-cultural experience led her to develop a new way of seeing everyday life, not through fixed identity and pre-existing categories, but rather infused with the notion of differenciation, and in search of truths as a process.
