Mathias WalterCountry: France
Mathias Walter is a French filmmaker and cinematographer.
After studying American literature and cinema, Mathias worked as a fashion photographer for ten years. His work was featured in French Elle, WE, Madame Figaro and Lucky Magazine and appeared in advertising campaigns by Publicis, DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi, for brands such as Dior, Chantal Thomass, Paule Ka, Nikon, Sisley. His interest in cinema grew during this time as he experimented with mixing cinematographic and photographic techniques...
As a cinematographer, he started with advertising and video clip, but he soon turned to feature films and narratives because it was closer to « real » life and it suited him more than corporate jobs.
Mathias also turned to documentary filmmaking in 2008 with Cinderella's Dream, a behind-the-scenes look at the world of fashion modelling. The same year, he wrote and directed a 35mm short film called Fatale. In 2009 he made his second short film, Saudade, about memory and melancholia, which was selected by the famous French festival Côté Court in Paris/Pantin. Later, another of his shorts, "Apparences" (Appearances) was also selected in the same festival, in 2015.
In June 2016, Mathias re-edited his first film, Fatale, as it was showed to a wide audience in the festival.
Recently, he also took a stage on documentary film technics in a famous school called les Ateliers Varan in Paris, which were created by Jean Rouch, one of the first documentary filmmaker inventing the « cinéma du réel ».
"Cinema is a perfect tool for showing human feelings ans statements, and fiction tells more about us than documentary."
