Director Biography - Jorge Luna

Jorge Luna At the age of seven he was inspired by a virtuoso circus performance by a troupe called Círcolo. Jorge Luna started off as a dj and loved being smuggled into nightclubs at a young age to spin. Director Statement

English:
My main inspiration for the creation of this film was my father’s passing due to COVID-19 (28 Nov. 2020). In this Butoh dance inspired experimental film, the character of Papa wrestles against an inevitable predicament caused by a love triangle of his own making. His maximum effort to do what he thinks is best is eclipsed by things not entirely going his way. Papa’s journey is one filled with difficult plight- his actions coloured by obvious embarrassment and antipathy towards the things that are not in agreement with his views. His son, Yoyo watches attentively. The piece is scored by Felipe Rosario Goyco’s “Madrigal” as interpreted by “Trío Los 3 Nombres,” my father’s real-life, three person music band, recorded in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1983.

El cortometraje de danza "papa y yoyo" fue conceptualizado para rendir honor a mi padre tras su muerte a causa de COVID-19 en Noviembre de 2020. Lo desarrollé como parte de una pieza virtual llamada “EN: 2021” de la compañía de Butoh y teatro físico Ren Gyo Soh, la cual está radicada en Nueva York y de la cual formo parte como miembro asociado. La coreografía es completamente Butoh. En la pieza, el personaje de Papa lucha en contra de las consecuencias inevitables que causaron su triángulo amoroso. Su trayecto es uno lleno de tormento, aflicción y tribulaciones; sus acciones decoradas por el bochorno y antipatía hacia las cosas que no suceden como él quisiera. Papa claramente atraviesa un conflicto real. Su hijo Yoyo lo observa con atención. En la pieza escuchamos la canción “Madrigal” de Felipe Rosario Goyco en la versión interpretada por el trío de mi padre, “Los 3 Nombres'', grabada en San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1983.
