Chia Chee Sum (1983, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) started making short films during his studies at the Multimedia University (Cyberjaya, Malaysia), where he majored in 3D animation. Alumnus of Asian Film Academy 2007, and FIRST Training Camp at FIRST International Film Festival 2019 in Xining, China. His short films were screened in Busan International Short Film Festival, SGIFF, and other film festivals. Through filmmaking, animation and photography, he tells stories about peripheral everyday life inspired by urban dwellers he came into contact with.
Otak-Otak was made during the FIRST Training Camp in Xining, China, as part of the FIRST International Film Festival 2019. The film was inspired by a conversation with my grandfather, about his diaspora siblings in China.
