Scharlin-Pettee graduated from Oberlin College in 2013 with degrees in Cinema Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. She received the Cinema Studies Award for Achievement in Critical Writing for her thesis, "The Abyssal Womb: Queer Spectatorship and Abjection in Horror Cinema." As a Centennial Undergraduate Intern with the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, Scharlin-Pettee assisted the National Center for Jewish Film with outreach, publicity, and archival work.
Scharlin-Pettee has since written on the topics of hobby games and monstrosity for Vice and In Res Media, and produced an award-winning short at Reel Stories, a filmmaking program for girls and non-binary youth aged 12–19 years old.
She is now an elementary school teacher.
I am eternally grateful for all of the students, faculty, staff and alumni at Oberlin College that supported this project. I couldn't have done this without you. Thanks for believing in my horrific little vision!
