What is this? What is that? Diving in the neighbourhood with the children
Dom Afonso Henriques visits the Anjos neighbourhood in Lisbon in 2022 and is joined by a group of children from the Sampaio Garrido school. What has changed? Who lives here? What is an ice-cream shop?
This amateur micro budget cartoon was created by a group of elementary school students with very little technical support, using a simple smartphone, to share the results of their research about the neighbourhood and the local commerce, during the Little Anthropology Workshop in 2021-2022, in Lisbon. The tour between past and present - inspired by the interviews they previously made - represents their experience of diversity in a changing context, and the importance of shops, restaurants and of course the people who make them, to feel at home in their neighbourhood. It is part of a wider initiative, called Diving in the neighbourhood with the children that centers children's voices through ethnographic research, art and cultural interventions to address the transformations and conflicts of their neighbourhoods and cities. It stands also as a statement about the importance of recognising children as audiovisual creators for an audience that includes all ages.
