I’ve spent the last 15 years primarily as a film trailer editor in London, analyzing various feature films and breaking them down - looking for their unique strengths, their stand out performances and the beating heart of their stories, in order to find a way to get audiences excited about them in the space of 1-2 minutes.
Back in 2014, my mother began to suffer from a mysterious illness. As time drew on, I started to see her lose all the pieces of her personality: her smile, her laugh, and eventually her ability to recognize me.
Once my mother had passed away, I struggled to access the good memories of her. All I could see, when I tried to think about her, was a vision of her decline.
After a few years had passed, and I had formed a new, loving relationship, I found I was able to distance myself from the ‘horrible ending’. I was able to look further back, accessing happy childhood memories of my mother once again.
‘Onset’ is a film about that journey. Rather than being about the victim of dementia, it’s about being the relative of the victim.
