I wanted to tell this story to show the consequences of living in denial. Through my personal experience as well as the experiences of people close to me, I noticed how often, when in a romantic relationship, we choose to ignore all the warning signs and pretend that everything is fine. Because we are scared of change, scared of being alone or simply just scared of failure.
The need of maintaining a certain image is especially strong right now, in the age of social media: everyone is curating their life to make it look amazing and pull the online likes. We slowly enter a dangerous spiral where it is not desirable to express emotions that are not positive, that might make people uncomfortable. And the aim of my film is to make people uncomfortable, make them question their actions, and hopefully find the strength to remove themselves from unhealthy situations.
For me, this film is feminist, even if in a very brutal way. I was born in Poland, where the situation of women experiencing domestic violence is tragic, and it is only getting worse. It seems to be the case in many places right now, including the fact that Russia has decriminalized some domestic abuse earlier this year, or the Women's March movement in the USA. I wanted this movie to be a cautionary tale: you ignore things, you do not want to cause problems, and little by little you grow dependent or codependent, until it is too late. Do not be like Laura, the main character of the film. Get up and leave.
That being said, I know very well that men can stay in such abusive relationships as well, so I do hope the message of the film can get through to everyone, regardless their gender.
