You guys have chosen a subculture that most people will have never seen. They will be surprised. Who knew that such a thing exists. That’s how people felt about discovering surfing, or Okie Noodling, or Cannibalism, or Dwarf Tossing, or 16 Days of Glory (about the training that goes into every Olympic dream). What blows me away about your film is two-fold, the pointlessness of racing to the top and the decency and community spirit of people who all seem like scary stereotypes of red-necks. I also enjoyed seeing the women. the ones who drink and run and puke as well as the skillful one who succeeds in getting to the top of the hill. You go girl! Your film will stick in people’s minds. It’s very effective at taking the viewer someplace they have never been and just allowing us to poke around and immerse ourselves in the history, competition, and uniquely ephemeral atmosphere. It’s just once a year. And then poof it disappears. I like Hill Climb a lot and am thrilled to share it. It’s a strong metaphor for all competitions that create community. And for all doc makers - artists who have to climb a hill in the real world just to finish a film. And then climb an even steeper one to get it in front of audiences. Congrats! -- Jeff Spitz (Sundance Film Festival honoree )
