NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) presents the NFMLA Monthly Film Festival, a uniquely intimate opportunity that provides a filmmaker focused festival approach by an intently devoted team. The model, a monthly festival with a very small number of official selections per month, generally fewer than 20, provides filmmakers with maximum attention and commitment from the Festival audience, participants and staff. This format allows NFMLA to serve a similar number of filmmakers as most annual Festivals (average of 220 per year), while being able to dedicate its efforts to a core group every month throughout the year.

Each NFMLA Monthly Film Festival provides its official selection of filmmakers meetings with professionals, press interviews with publications such as MovieMaker Magazine, industry panels, screenings, audience Q&A sessions, networking receptions and qualification for the Best of NFMLA Awards.

The Festival boasts over 120,000 indie film supporters in the LA area and regularly has executives and creatives participate from Sony Pictures Entertainment, Amazon Studios, Netflix, Warner Bros., United Talent Agency, NBCUniversal, HBO, NEON, Endeavor, STARZ, Bad Robot, Creative Artists Agency, Management 360, AMC Studios, MGM, FilmNation, Lionsgate, Magnolia Pictures, Paramount, Circle of Confusion, MACRO, Skydance and Blumhouse among an abundance of other agencies, management companies, production houses, distributors, studios, streamers and more.

Submissions are open year-round and NFMLA highly encourages filmmakers to submit their newest work as early as possible to maximize their project’s consideration window. NFMLA screens short and feature films (narrative, documentary, experimental and animation), as well as music videos and new media projects by content creators of all backgrounds throughout the year as part of our eclectic ongoing selection, in addition to our InFocus programming, which places a special emphasis on diversity, inclusion and regional representation with its spotlighted group of filmmakers each month.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging within NFMLA’s programming is incredibly important, and all filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their work for consideration in all upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the InFocus programming calendar. By submitting to NFMLA, you are entering consideration for all future months. However, if you are aiming to be considered for a specific InFocus Festival program, we do suggest submitting at least 4 months in advance of the program.

NFMLA is seeking submissions from filmmakers who are eager to gain access to industry professionals, audiences and resources. Our programming includes Festivals at the South Park Center in Downtown Los Angeles and select Festivals presented in partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

NFMLA is a not-for-profit organization that champions emerging filmmakers from around the world and has screened over 4,500 films from 92+ countries. In an effort to showcase, support, educate and build relationships for next-gen filmmakers, NFMLA has rapidly expanded beyond the NFMLA Monthly Film Festival to host an array of workshops, panels, competitions and networking programs. NFMLA offers an unforgettable festival experience that helps kick start the careers of new storytellers.

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles selections are in competition for NewFilmmakers Los Angeles’ annual Best of NFMLA Awards, which take place each spring and award films played the preceding calendar year across multiple categories. All projects selected as part of the festival are in consideration for the Best of NFMLA Awards.

In addition, NFMLA awards cash grants through various NFMLA programs and initiatives such as NewNarratives, the Anthony Rhulen Film Fund and more. In 2023 NFMLA awarded over $115,000 in cash grants and prizes.

An incredible, well-organized festival with a lot of heart! NewFilmmakers LA went above and beyond to create an experience that was truly special. The virtual talks with industry experts were super helpful and tailored to suit our group's needs. The screening was fantastic, and I was struck by how inclusive, diverse, and exceptional the film selection was. Danny the host was excellent - he made the Q&As and the movie mag interview feel fun and comfortable. A big thank you to the wonderful NFMLA team for this amazing and inclusive experience!

NewFilmmakers LA exceeded all expectations and honestly changed my perceptions about what a festival could be. From the well-curated industry sessions, to the on-camera interview, to their impressive programming, it's easily one of the best festival experiences I've had. It was an honor and privilege to be selected by them. I would submit my next project in a heartbeat.

Let me start by saying that the NewFilmmakersLA festival completely exceeded my expectations. My film was selected this year and as a filmmaker transitioning from the world of shorts to features, I wasn't sure what to expect. But this festival truly catered to filmmakers in this specific phase.

What impressed me most was the programming's focus on fostering connections. The programmers went above and beyond to curate a program that put us filmmakers face-to-face with industry professionals directly relevant to the types of films we're making. It wasn't a generic industry meet-and-greet – it felt diligent and thoughtful.

The intimate setting (even remotely) allowed for genuine conversations and networking opportunities. This kind of personalized approach is rare, especially for filmmakers like myself, navigating the sometimes-daunting world of the film industry.

The festival fostered a sense of community and support for aspiring feature filmmakers. It was a truly enriching experience that's hard to find anywhere else. I can't recommend this festival highly enough.

I tell everyone about my experience with NewFilmmakers LA and their festival. It was honestly everything I could ever imagine wanting in a festival and more. We had a whole week of connecting with industry professionals, built a strong community of Latino/x filmmakers, a wonderful and fully packed screening, and so much press. Everyone on their team is so great at communicating and offering all their passion and help towards being the next step for filmmakers in their career. Thank you a million times over!
