Director Statement

I loved the idea of exploring the very primal motivations behind how a young Mexican fighter defends his mask and ultimately his honor. Not only that but also seeing how these motivations can triumph even in the most challenging situations; like a serious fight in a ring on the street in Mexico City.

The scenery which the main character moves through, the city’s rough neighborhoods, underground markets and the rusty gym becomes another obstacle, another antagonistic force which the young Mexican wrestler David must deal with constantly while receiving disapproval from his father. As a result of that hardship David begins to discover his strength and power in training and is determined to fight until one day he will come out on top: as a glorified fighter in the famous Arena Mexico.

Whilst the heart of the amusing film is certainly focused on the journey of David, we were also able to capture thrilling set pieces of real street fights and rough training which balance and heighten the more thoughtful moments. In this way I believe the audience will connect with David and his unique adventure through the world of Mexican Wrestling, just as I did.
