Born in Riga, Latvia, Raivo moved to Vancouver BC, Canada in 2009 to peruse his passion for film and cinematography and story telling. Following his dream to establish himself as a unique filmmaker, he has worked on many independent projects to find his own style and vision. He has graduated from Vancouver film school with honours, specializing in Cinematography and Directing.
Never before have I done any black and white cinematography. So I decided to go for it. This project was shot in 6 hours in 1 studio with 6 different production design setups back to back. It was a real challenge for all crew and cast, but together as a strong team we were able to made it happen!
This project is inspired by Roger Ballen’s unique photography. I was amazed how his photography is so gritty, true and beautiful at the same time. I have never seen anything like that before and it really inspired me for this project, Mare. However his photography is just an inspiration for this project and Mare is my own personal vision and style.
Mare is a journey of our deepest subconsciousness of fears. We have all experienced uncomfortable dreams that we have been stuck in and not able to understand. We can't change or react the way we want which makes it feel like there is no way out and there is no other choice left other then to accept it. And finally when you wake up it takes time to process - was it a dream or reality?
As a filmmaker, I am creating these beautiful images with a dark and gritty atmosphere. Looking through the glass and examining the light and the meaning of a greater story. I hope to create a unique experience for my audience.
