Little Human Tales
Little Human Tales is a film that was made entirely with real life footages short over a period of three years, using nothing but a mobile camera.
The film centres around a little kid in his early years. The kid happened to be filmmaker’s neighbour’s kid and he would come everyday to the filmmaker’s house. There he was welcomed by ‘Pappa' and ‘Mummy’, filmmaker's parents, with whom he essentially grew up for the next few years. The bond and interactions between these characters, and many others around, is the core happenings in this film. While portraying this, however, the film also explores the things around, becoming a portrait of the life and times of a kid growing up in a small neighbourhood, in a village in Kerala, South India.
It is a film that continues on what Jonas Mekas pioneered, a form of cinema that simply captures a series of real life events as and when they occurred, without any sort of pre-planning or script. However, in Little Human Tales, director Alex Xavier tries to go further a step ahead. Than being just a chronological ordering of footages, the film tries to actively narrate a story through the way the footages are captured and sequenced. The film is not just recording and showcasing events, but is a the narration of a story, or a collection of stories, connected through time and the flow of life itself. It is an attempt to show the cinema in all of it, an attempt to demonstrate that life itself is a collection of little movies, that reality is a movie we are in. In this film, although there was no pre-written script, there is a script that was developed, but after first shooting for almost three years consecutively. Digging and trimming through this large collection of footages, a narration was created. In other words, this film is a fictitious tale made by stitching up many pieces of captured reality, where it shows the boundaries of non-fiction and fiction are blurred easily. As such the film is a documentary but also a ‘cinematic’ tale and experience.
