Director Biography - Andrea Defronzo

[ENG] Andrea Defronzo (November 6, 1999), known as "Andrew" to friends, is a director and screenwriter from Giovinazzo, a town in Apulia near Bari, in Southern Italy. He developed a passion for filmmaking at a young age, which led him to watch many films and explore cinema as a self-taught enthusiast. After graduating from a language high school, he studied at IULM University with Gianni Canova, but during the Covid pandemic, he decided to return to Apulia, where he attended the Amarcord Academy of Directing and later graduated with top marks in audiovisual production at the Apulia Digital ITS Academy. He took his first steps as a production assistant for Scirocco Film in Lecce. At Bifest 2024, he was selected for the masterclass "The Territory of Ideas”, led by screenwriter Silvia Napolitano, which focused on the very first phase of story development: the idea. He enrolls in the Academy of Fine Arts of Bari, specializing in cinema, and, based on a directing exercise supervised by filmmaker Alessandro Piva, writes and directs “Listen", an experimental short film in LIS (Italian Sign Language). The short film wins the jury award for ‘Best Apulian Student Short Film’ at the Cortocircuiti Student Short Film Festival and an Honorable Mention at the Out of Bounds Film Festival in Molfetta. His second experimental short film, “Foodage”, wins the ‘Food and Future’ video art contest organized by Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò in New York, where it also receives an Honorable Mention from the audience. The achievement is covered by prominent newspapers such as La Repubblica and La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, and he is invited as a guest on television networks like Telenorba, Antenna Sud, and Telebari. The short film also takes home the first prize at Cinecibo, a gastronomic cinema festival in Rome. He is selected as a finalist at the RIDF (Rome International Documentary Festival) in the ‘Documenting Rights’ section, a documentary writing masterclass inspired by the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

[ENG] "Listen" needs no words; it doesn’t rely on them. It is the fleeting encounter of two worlds that brush against each other but do not belong together - a gaze that, as Dacia Maraini teaches, can at times become flesh and unite two people more deeply than an embrace. The need for contact as an antidote to absence.
