like a woman
The perfect woman has it all:
[I’m unsatisfied]
a successful career, solid relationships, children, and a perfectly neat house;
[I’m tired]
She’s always pretty and proper;
[I hate my body]
never complains and looks very happy.
[I’m angry]

Gisela Ferreira is a dancer and choreographer currently based in Oporto (Portugal). She was born in 1997 and grew up in Águeda, where she started training in classical ballet. Later, she took on contemporary dance and made it her focus, joining Escola Superior de Dança (Lisbon) in 2016. She graduated in 2019 and moved to Oporto to participate in the 2020 edition of Companhia Instável’s Advanced Program in Interpretation and Choreography (FAICC).
When FAICC 2020 was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gisela began experimenting with virtual formats, creating online projects and short video-dance pieces such as “como uma mulher”.
As a dancer, Gisela has worked with artists such as Liliana Garcia (“Porque é Que o Céu é Azul”, 2019), Lucia Nacht (“Monumentos em Ação”, 2019) and Joana Borges (“Dust”, 2021). Since 2022 she has also been collaborating regularly with Backstage Dance Company (Braga) under the direction of Rosália Passinhas, having performed in the pieces “A Lenda da Vela de Natal” and “Pythagoras Speech”.
Among Gisela’s stage works she highlights “12658” (2020), “Fantasmas de Prata” (2021, cocreation with Mário M. Fonseca) and “CERES” (2022, cocreation with Délia Krayenbühl and Mariana Barbosa). In 2022 she became a cofounder of the Oporto-based CAMAFEU collective and performed in the group’s first piece, “Outros Lugares” (directed by Andreia Alpuim and Francisco Oliveira). In 2023 Gisela took on the role of producing CAMAFEU’s most recent work, “REBENTO” (directed by Mário M. Fonseca).
Where is a woman’s place? Apparently, everywhere. On top of their full-time jobs, most women take on hours of unpaid work, carrying out, on average, over three times more domestic and care work than their partners.
“como uma mulher” (Portuguese for “like a woman”) aims to bring light to this unfair discrepancy. The ideal of the perfect woman, that is always on top of everything and taking care of everyone, is not only unreachable but also destructive, leaving women unhappy and constantly exhausted. We must fight for an equal distribution of household chores, continuing the work of those who pressed for equal pay in the workplace.
