Lick City
During the 80’s and 90’s an aggressive crew of young ghetto entrepreneurs from Jefferson Park, an urban community in the beating heart of South Central Los Angeles, hits licks for a living.
Much of the action in Lick City takes place in Jefferson Park, AKA the Hood, South Central, the ghetto. Violence, drugs, poverty and danger are everyday realities. It’s a decidedly blue collar environment chock full of run down houses and apartment buildings, pawnshops, liquor stores, cheap motels, mom and pop eateries and dope houses. It’s populated by working people, winos, drug addicts, gang- bangers and church people - all living congested, on top of one another.
But Jefferson Park has a lot in common with the rest of Los Angeles. It’s only a hour drive to the snow in Big Bear. The sun baked beaches along the Pacific Coast Highway are minutes away. Exclusive areas like Beverly Hills, Malibu, the Hollywood Hills and Newport Beach are easily within striking distance of this urban underworld. And if it’s in striking distance, it will be struck.
Hip hop culture blew up in the 1980’s. Rap music, break dancing and graffiti gained world wide popularity among the youth. In Los Angeles another social phenomenon became dominant - gang culture.
